The This Side of the Bridge: March to the Capitol will mark the powerful conclusion of the 60th Anniversary Commemoration of the Selma to Montgomery March, bringing together participants from around the world to retrace the historic final leg of the journey that helped shape American democracy.
Taking place on March 23, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM, this event will begin at the City of St. Jude Catholic Parish, where thousands of marchers gathered in 1965 before making their final push to the steps of the Alabama State Capitol. In a tribute to the courage and determination of those who marched for voting rights six decades ago, modern-day participants will walk the same path, reaffirming their commitment to justice and equality.
At the Capitol, a powerful program of speakers and performers will honor the legacy of the movement while addressing the ongoing challenges of voting rights and civil justice today. Featuring activists, historians, and community leaders, the event will serve as a platform for reflection, inspiration, and action.
For the first time in history, participants will also have the opportunity to experience the march virtually through Montgomery’s groundbreaking Metaverse Project. This innovative digital recreation allows people across the globe to engage with the event in a fully immersive format, walking the historic trail, witnessing pivotal moments, and learning about key figures who shaped the civil rights movement.
🔹 Virtual participants will receive a link on the morning of March 23 to create their avatar, allowing them to fully engage in this historic experience from anywhere in the world.
Following the march, attendees will gather at the MGM Pop-Up Park on Lower Dexter Avenue for Sunday Funday, a celebratory event featuring music, food, and community fellowship.
Whether joining in person or virtually, the March to the Capitol is more than a reenactment—it is a call to action, a reminder of the sacrifices made for democracy, and a renewed commitment to the ongoing fight for voting rights and social justice.
